On behalf of Chris’s entire family and with great support from The Summerland Rotary Club, we are very excited to announce the inaugural Christopher Walker Memorial Race on Giant’s Head Grind in beautiful Summerland, British Columbia on Saturday, May 17, 2014.

Chris had a journey with Cancer that touched our lives in ways we could never have expected, which ultimately ended his life. It was a terrible journey that so many in our community have sadly had to take with their own loved ones. We hope that this race and the spirit it will bring to the City of Summerland, will urge us all to move ever forward and continue to always climb that next peak.

Ellen's Grind for Chris ( details )

The Giants Head Grind - Christopher Walker Memorial race is our families way of honouring Chris and his battle with Colon Cancer and bringing attention and funding to this deadly disease. This has long been a disease that has targeted men and women over 50 but daily I seem to be confronted with stories of much younger people such as Chris being diagnosed with late stages of this disease and ultimately succumbing to it. I will do whatever small part I can to assist in the battle. "The powerful play goes on and we may contribute a verse...what will your verse be"

We are climbing the Giant in honour of our amazing cousin and friend, Chris, who lost his battle to colon cancer at an incredibly young age. We decided to create "Team Toddler" in honour of Chris' nickname that came out of being the youngest (by a long shot) at Rob's Stag in Seattle almost 10 years ago. Here's to Chris who may have been the youngest in age, but was the wisest among those many years his senior.

The Sunshine Family meets the Giants Head Grind ( details )

hello friends and family, As many of you know, last May my cousin Chris Walker died from Colon Cancer. He was just 29 years old and before his diagnosis was vibrant, fit and full of life. To honor him and to raise money for colon cancer research my aunt Ellen has created a yearly "race/hike" called the Giant Head Grind in Summerland BC. This is the first annual race/hike and it will be held May 17, 2014. I am going to be walking the hike with Bob and Ujia and we have set up a team called "The sunshine Family" in reference to the doll family my sister and I played with every summer in the Okanogan. We would love you to join us. We would love for you to join our team and the hike or to simply pledge your support. For those who don't know, Summerland is a beautiful resort town on the lake and there are great accommodations at the Summerland Resort which is where we will be staying. We will probably be there for 5 days.

Giants Head Grind - Help Support this great cause ( details )

As you know this cause is very dear to me not only directly but indirectly and all funds raised will go to the Summerland Rotary Club and will be donated to Colon Cancer research and diagnostic efforts and for ongoing upkeep and upgrade to the Giants Head Trail System*. Colon or colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of both male and female cancer-related deaths in Canada. In 2013, almost half of those diagnosed with colon cancer died. Surprisingly, colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. With early detection and treatment, over 90% of these cases could and should have resulted in a full recovery. Starting at the shores of Okanagan Lake at Peach Orchard Beach, participants will race ‘beach-to-peak’ to the top of Giant’s Head Mountain, covering 5 kilometers and gaining 500 meters in elevation.

Participating for my cousin, Chris Walker ( details )

On Saturday, May 17, I will be running in honor of my cousin, Chris Walker. It is an unexpected moment in life when you hear that your 28 year old cousin has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. He was truly the last person I expected to ever meet this fate. Chris was born in Calgary and raised primarily in Summerland, BC. He was a high ranked Hockey goalie, even going away at 16 to dedicate himself to his favorite sport. When his desire to get a good education took over, he went to university at UBC, studying premed. Ironically, he studied cancer treatments and often had interesting discoveries to talk about. During this time, he ran 2 Ironman’s with my Dad in Penticton and ran numerous marathons. He left medicine and entered his real passion, law. He studied at UBC but did summer terms in Calgary at BDP as well as doing a school term in Copenhagen. He graduated in June 2010, passed the bar in June 2011, and was sadly diagnosed with colon cancer in June 2012. His valiant battle lasted 11 months when he passed away on May 23, 2013. The irony is that Chris has a history of colon cancer in his family and had asked several times for a colonoscopy. He was told, because of his health and his age, he was not at risk. What we have learned since is that colon cancer is not an ‘old person’s’ disease. In fact, there is 2 additional under 30 year olds within our small circle that also sadly passed away from this rare, or not so rare, disease. We have also learned that colonoscopies are not the only option. There are other, less invasive, and less expensive tests that can help in the detection. So I will be participating and climbing Giant Head Mountain on May 17, to not only honor Chris but to also raise money for Colon Cancer. Here are some interesting statistics on this disease and the hope for the future with awareness and proper testing.

Like most people, I've had friends and family who've been struck by cancer. Some have made it and some have not. The worst part is that doesn't make me any different than most people as so many lives have been affected in one way or the other. So we do what we can to change that. And what I can do is to help raise funds by hiking this weekend, and also help raise the spirits of the other racers as they laugh while they run right by me as I struggle mightily up the hill. I probably should have trained.
